A Gift from a Familiar Face

A Gift from a Familiar Face

This work was given to us by Margaret Lau, a long-time customer of the bakery.

Margaret is an artist working in hyper-realism. The piece, titled 6.2 million croissants (2025), was offered to us around the time we moved to our current address.

We’ve kept it as it was given — as a gesture rather than a statement. Over time, it has settled into the background of our daily work, familiar in the same way regular faces are familiar.

Bread is temporary. It is eaten, shared, finished. To see it translated into something lasting — something observed slowly — was unexpected, and deeply touching. What mattered most was not the subject itself, but that something we make quietly, every day, found its way into another form of making.

Some things arrive through continuity — through returning, noticing, and being recognised without ceremony.

This was one of those moments.
